I went in to the studio for just a few hours. I wanted to restructure a start and finalize a finish. I was lucky enough to do both.

This is this piece’s restructured start. Because I have such an effective start in terms of narrative, I want to see how much non-representational chaos it can support. Very much the way that another recent piece does.

This study is a good example of how I want to build the foreground of ONE CORNER. The balance of explanation and feeling is ideal

This is an example of balance I wish for ONE CORNER, above. I feel this is a wonderful example of the balance between explanation vs. feeling.

Cascade: 48 x 36 inches

I was able to finish this painting to my satisfaction. Its strengths are: 1) a strong focal point, 2) a gentle counter-clockwise visual rotation where the ghost of the tree on the left returns the viewer's eye to the bottom left, ready to move through the canvas again, and 3) a successful build-up of paint in the foreground.

I was able to focus the viewer's eye and generate a bit of counter clock-wise rotation in this narrow strong vertical piece

My goal was to create a focal point at the edge of the central boulder, with focus gradually dissolving both behind and in front of it.

I was able to include this much excitement because of the strength and crispness of the central boulder.

I was able to use a lot of paint and energy to recreate a genuine feel for the water.
